Ice Climbing Conditions — January 16 update

Over the past two weeks, ice climbing conditions in Rjukan have remained generally good and stable, with winter temperatures keeping most major routes in climbable shape. Though you should still expect wet conditions. Lower-elevation areas need a bit more sustained cold to really form

Cold periods have preserved solid ice on classic areas such as Krokan, Vemork, Ozzimossis and Gaustatoppfossen with many routes showing good thickness and structure. The forecast shows a few milder days toward the weekend, and combined with recent snowfall, conditions may become slightly wetter. However, the new snow is actually beneficial: fresh snow helps promote water flow above the routes, which in turn contributes to continued ice formation over time.
