Ice Climbing Conditions — February update

Ice climbing conditions in Rjukan remain generally good, with stable winter temperatures over the past week helping to maintain solid ice across most of the major venues. That said, you should still expect some wet sections, especially on sun-exposed routes or during the warmer parts of the day. Lower-elevation areas are holding up, but they would benefit from a longer stretch of consistent cold to fully consolidate.

Classic areas such as Krokan, Vemork, Ozzimosis and Gaustatoppfossen are in good shape overall, with many routes showing solid thickness and well-bonded ice. Recent snowfall has refreshed the landscape and added to the overall alpine feel in the valley.

The forecast indicates slightly milder temperatures toward the weekend. Combined with the recent snow, this may lead to somewhat wetter surface conditions in places. However, the new snow is generally positive for long-term formation: it helps regulate temperature and supports water flow above the routes, which contributes to continued ice build-up when temperatures drop again.
